I am a monkey and I live in the zoo,
With my brothers and my sisters,
And my parents too.

I love bananas so I eat them all day,
If they gave me something else,
Then I'd say "NO WAY!"

I sing the monkey song,
The monkey song,
The monkey song,
I sing the monkey song,
All day long.

Hey! - how about you,
Do you love at the zoo? [Yes!!]
Well I think that's because...
You're a monkey too!

Will you sing the monkey song,
The monkey song,
The monkey song,
You sing the monkey song,
All day long.

People come to see us and we make them smile,
They stand and they watch,
And they stay a while.

If you ask me, then they'd all rather be,
Swinging here with us,
On the monkey tree.

We all sing the monkey song,
The monkey song,
The monkey song,
We all sing the monkey song,
All day long.

[notes]
Ok, so it's a silly children's song, I don't do many.

When I do though, I feel it's very important to make them
irresistably catchy and very easy for:

(a) Me to play.
(b) Kids to sing.

This makes them much easier to weaponise.

You can take your own view on this but the chorus part can
easily be a simple D-A-E progression that any fool with
fingers (like me) can bash out on an accoustic guitar.

In fact, it works really well strumming D to A until taking
it to down to the final E on the last line (All day long)
D A E
Dah! Dah! Daaahhhhh!

I've been throwing in G & C into the verse and the little
bridgy bit. I like it, you may differ (all major chords though,
screw the circle of fifths, this is supposed to be jolly.)

Anyway, should you find yourself at (say) your niece's place
over a holiday season and be and dropped right in it with a
bunch of screaming kids "Oh, your uncle can play the guitar
ask him to give you a song"...

As far as I am concerned, all bets are off. Especially if
said neice could only manage a pack of handkerchiefs by way
of a Christmas gift. (Not even monogrammed)

I should also say, make sure there is loads of audience
participation and plenty of actions (every kid has a monkey dance
that they can break out - established fact.)

I guarantee you they will be singing it for DAYS afterwards. Long
after you have gone home and your tight-fisted relative's
sanity is hanging by a mere thread "pleeeaaase in the name of God
make them stop."
