we sat in awe
under bright umbrellas
of pyrotechnic skies
at the close of bastille day
neath the basilica of the sacred heart
on the parisian heights of montmartre
in nineteen seventy-one

promised for the morrow
a foggy gauloises drive to sète
through a cancerous haze
with talk en route of dali and picasso
that would bring us to the feet
of the barcelona scaffolds
encircling the sagrada família
with a steely crown of barbs

before us
that trepidatious step
the step too far
the nightmare towers
the fragile bridge
the incomplete stones
the misplaced foot

ahead
unknown pathways
infinite steps
brittle bridges
and building blocks
of dna and memories

and should we return
five decades hence
antoni’s dream would find completion
while we build on
sheltering in awe
under bright umbrellas
of autumn colour
and winter white
