Lady of the Moor

I went out upon the Moor in the autumn night
I went out upon the Moor without a light
They told me to take care on the Moor at night
Lest the Lady of the Moor come take me home

I walked upon the Moor and the stars grew dim
I walked upon the Moor and the chill set in
I walked upon the Moor there was ner a sound
The Lady of the Moor was not around

As I walked upon the Moor I thought of days gone by
I remembered the old story how the lady had died
She lost her own true love then she took her life
On the Moor in the cold of an autumn night

Far upon the Moor was I that night
Alone upon the moor without a light
I thought I heard a sound I hadn’t heard before
I stopped to listen but it was heard no more

Was it footsteps that I heard or just some small wild thing
Was it laughter that I heard or just some birds that sing
Was it crying that I heard or just the waling of the wind
Or was it the Lady of the Moor come to take me in

I turned I saw her coming she called and said it’s time
I ran but with no reason as a shiver shook my spine
I ran and then I stumbled I could not run no more
She came and stood before me and said I’m the Lady of the Moor

Ghostly white and pale was the Lady of the Moor
A long white gown torn and tattered was all that she wore
Her skinless hand came toward me as her fleshless face did smile
She said you’ll come home with me and sit with me a while

So if you’re out alone on an autumn night
If you’re out alone without a light
If you’re out alone it may be your plight
To meet the lady of the Moor on a cold autumn night
