My wife and I see eye to eye on most things, but I cannot lie
It’s easier to nod than disagree
On matters of small consequence

Now I’m a chef. Kitchens ain’t the same to her and me.

She wants a kitchen, clean and bright: keep the clutter out of sight
I want an expression of my soul.
The salesman gave a choice of three
We could choose modernity
But I told him that I ain’t no modern man
The Shaker style was his next plan
I said “I ain’t no Puritan”
His last suggestion made me smile
“You can have the Country style!”

I’ll take one cupboard, paint it black
Inside, outside, front and back
To remind me of the poor and the beaten down
Another thing I’m going to do
I’m going to name that cupboard “Sue”
Open it, it shouts at you
My name is Sue. How do you do?”
The fine spray of spit is an optional extra

Another cupboard, sand it down,
Strip the paint off to the brown
Rub it till a great big hole appears
Fill it with my blood and sweat
Hopes and fears and deep regrets
Bang on it for fifty years
Keep my finest herbs in there
Love it until death is near
