Here is another classic and obscure album from 1968. I found it while doing my "obscure bands of the 60ies" round on youtube, there is a shizzleload of interesting stuff out there. Anyway, I listened to it, it sounds a lot like Deep Purple (the Hammond and the singing style in particular) and I have to say I quite enjoyed it. Has all the ingredients for a good rock album of the period. The interesting thing is, on Wikipedia they have a quote from one band member that completely thrashed the album and the band, that sounds a bit harsh to me. Seems someone is bitter and twisted, but...

It's been a while guys, here is a serious post, take your time and go on a musical journey. This one is about one of my favourite albums of ALL times: "In the Court of the Crimson King", been listening to it since I was 14 or so, and still do. The CD is in my car. Always!

When we did the "Herring King" band project here on Wikiloops with Jemmy, eGil, Arkrock and Whitedrums 55, this album was constantly on my mind, one example is "In the school of the Herring King" which, as anyone can see, is a direct tribute.

But coming back to King Crimson: The song that hit me more than any other on this Album is "21st Century Schizoid Man". I found this GREAT article about this song, it is well worth reading it, here is a quote (the link to the article is at the end of this post.:

“We did it all in one take, from beginning to end, no edits,” McDonald recalls. “There were a couple of overdubs later, but the basic track was the four of us playing it in one take from beginning to end. So, as long it takes to hear ‘Schizoid Man,’ that’s how long it took us to put it down.” Here is a live version:

It's just after the festive season and seeing and hearing a lot of the three kings of the nativity story, it also made me think of the three kings of blues, BB, Albert and Freddie. Unlike the biblical three kings, they probably will be forgotten within a few half-centuries by all other than a few music buffs, the way modern music is going.

Anyways, on Sunday I was in the gym, and every time I start pumping I got to have music on to alleviate the boredom. So the last few sessions I listened to BB and Albert, and on Sunday it was the turn of the third King: Freddie King, Rock and roll Hall of Famer, hard-partying, smooth singing, beautiful guitar playing King of the Texas blues.

Anyone who is not aware of how important Freddie was, check out the list of guitarists that were influenced by him: Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Lonnie Mack, Savoy Brown, Chicken Shack, and my first contact with Freddie, Peter Green. Peter Green played one of Freddies songs "The Stumble"in 1967, which is a great instrumental - and that's when I first heard about Freddie King sometime in 1984 or so. I then heard the same song again when I bought a record by British band Love Sculpture on their "Blues Helping" album (Check out my earlier post about this album in this thread).

Freddie has a lot of great Albums, but the one I am going to recommend listening to is an album from 1972 called Texas Cannonball. I have listened to this album on my cassette player about 20 years ago until the cassette was worn out :D . The resoan why I feture this album is because on this album Freddie plays mainly songs by other people, putting his own twist on it, and basically owning these songs. And the singing, great.

So have a listen, and enjoy one of the great singers and guitarists, Peace and love brothers and sisters.

Hey folks, I have a cracking one here for you here.

I have been a MASSIVE Peter Green fan since I was about 13 or so, it started with "In the Skies" around 1977, and I have seen him play 3 times, unfortunately not in his prime but still. Anyway, other than Fleetwood Mac and his solo stuff, Peter Green played on some albums. One of those is called "Peter Bardens - The Answer" and is well worth a listen.

For those who are interested, Peter Bardens is probably more known to Prog Rock enthusiasts as the keyboard player of the excellent band Camel (I will talk about Camel in another post). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Bardens

The album is a great showcase for 70ies Rock, still sounds good 50 years later :W :W :W

A last note: Peter Green was notoriously anti-fame, and was suffering from mental health problems from the early 70ies until this very day, which is a known fact. On this Album his playing is still strong, very similar to the "The End of the Game (" record he made before disappearing for a few years, and although he is not credited on the album (he just wanted to play), it is him playing mostly on the left speaker I believe. If you are a Fleetwood Mac fan you will recognize his trademark licks.

One of the most under rated guitarists in my opinion TeeGee. One of my many idols.
In 1977 my band had the opportunity to open for him at the Agora theater in Colombus, Ohio for a two night show. I first met him while my bandmates and I were playing billiards during his sound check.
Mr. Marino came strolling into the billiard room while wirelessly playing his SG and played pool with us.
Needless to say I was overjoyed to be able to hang out with my idol for two nights.
It was a dream come true for me at the time. And he is a super nice guy. Check out their 4th album and also their Mahogany Rush Live album. Great stuff.
