A completely irrelevant thread from me but I'm in a retrospective mood this evening.
I'm looking for quotes, sayings, etc., from any source and era which ring true or seem particularly relevant to you. My favourite of all time is from Alice In Wonderland author C.S. Lewis (year unknown, probably somewhere in the early 20th Century). With the ever-increasing interference from Governments and, in particular, the EU who seem to think they know what's best for you (usually by increasing the tax on it or spying on you for your 'safety' ), this quote rings so very true to me:
“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”
I would translate it into French and German for our European friends but Google will probably make a complete mess of it.
Any gems you care to share?

Mr Twain is a great source of one-liners! I love his healthy cynicism.

It's a simple message (easily forgotten), but when it comes to music I always think of this quote from Duke Ellington:
"If it sounds good, it is good."
"If it sounds good, it is good."

When we look at modern man, we have to face the fact the modern man suffers from a kind of poverty of the spirit, which stands in glaring contrast with scientific and technological abundance.
We've learned to fly the air as birds, we've learned to swim the seas as fish, yet we haven't learned to walk The Earth as Brothers and Sisters.
- Martin Luther King Jr

I've said that playing the blues is like having to be black twice. Stevie Ray Vaughan missed on both counts, but I never noticed.
B. B. King
Saturday night is your big night. Everybody used to fry up fish and have one hell of a time. Find me playing till sunrise for 50 cents and a sandwich. And be glad of it. And they really liked the low-down blues.

Blues is easy to play, but hard to feel.

"When I was growing up, I decided I wanted to make a living from what I can do best.
Then I realized there was no real market for masturbation,
so I started playing the bass."
- Les Claypool
its not the exact quote, but he said something along those lines...
